Easter & All

This post probably could be broken down into 3 different posts. Instead, I'll label the events numerically. Otherwise you might mix up the animals at the safari with relatives we spent Easter with. Haaa!

1. Recently we played hooky from our daily routine and spent an afternoon at the Wild Animal Safari in Pine Mountain. If you go, rent one of their zebra piece-of-junk vans. We were glad we did when a water buffalo head-butted the van. Casey and I were responsible for Savannah, Colt, Annie Grace, Jack and my dad.

Jack hung out the window the whole time. I'm pretty sure he would have stayed.

I strongly dislike birds. Pretty birds, smelly birds, I really hate them all.

The ostriches could stick their scrawny little heads all the way in the car. I ended up on the floor a lot- much to the amusement of my family.

I'm hoping Colt is eating animal crackers in their picture.

It cracks me up that the animals don't scare him.

Just as we feared, Dad wanted every animal at the safari.

2. We had a wonderful Easter. I will admit that I thought harder about Christ's death and Resurrection than I ever have. We did Resurrection Eggs with Colt and trying to telling the story & answer the questions for a 3 year old did my faith a lot of good. We don't do presents from the Easter bunny but did enjoy many Easter egg hunts. The most profitable (and the only one I have pictures from) was at my grandmother's house in Troy.

Notice the number of non-children looking for eggs? My grandparents have always put money in the eggs- no candy. This year was a little tame. Growing up it was a big wrestling match (think my dad x4 plus their children- its not calm)!!!

3. Colt has really enjoyed our garden. We've eaten lots (and lots) of spinach. We pick it every afternoon. Sometimes Colt eats it before we get in the house. Last night we picked some carrots and we had broccoli a few weeks ago. We are waiting on peppers, tomatoes and peas to be ready.

Our roses we planted last year have finally bloomed.

The Woods

This past weekend we took advantage of the beautiful weather and enjoyed a morning in the woods. We went to find a good place to camp. I think we found a perfect spot, now to find a free weekend!

Colt and Annie loved playing in the creek. I caught the perfect reaction of Annie watching Lottie (our dog) going crazy in the water.

This one didn't stay dry very long.

He completely fell in the creek. Even his hair was wet. Luckily it didn't bother him too much.

Annie is developing quite a fiesty little personality

This is her new "smile".

Afterwards we enjoyed a lovely pb&j picnic.

The picture is fuzzy because Colt had to be in the sun (notice that mommy was smart enough to bring a change of pants but forgot a shirt!).

Okay, so who is ready to go camping???

How It Really Happens

After many discussions over the last week (Supper Club, Shepherding a Child's Heart, random talks with friends), I realized that each of you may have a secret to being a good parent that I don't know!

How do you get out the door with multiple kids?
How do you get your kids to eat all their supper?
How do you get a good meal on the table before everyone eats too many snacks?
How do you keep your house clean?

The list could go forever!

These are some things that work in our house. My kids are 1 & 3. These things may have worked today and won't work tomorrow. I'm telling you my secrets in hopes that you will share your secrets!

1. I've given up on eating a healthy breakfast

The kids usually eat a breakfast bar, cereal or yogurt while the news/weather (Today Show) is on TV.

2. I shower, dry hair & quiet time before the kids get up. If they wake up in the process, they have to sit quietly on the bathroom floor. I put on my makeup in my foyer near the playroom while the kids eat. You don't need a picture.

3. I aim to have dinner ready at 6:00 p.m. We eat at home every night. The kids get a snack about 3:00 p.m. They play outside until its time to eat.

4. During the spring & summer we eat outside and let the dog eat our crumbs. I'm looking for a cheap highchair or booster seat so we don't have to drag the highchair out every night. I keep a tray on my kitchen counter to transport (fixed) plates outside.

4. Both kids take their shirts off to eat dinner. As soon as dinner is over Wes baths the kids while I clean.

5. We haven't figured out the solution on getting Colt to eat dinner. Our current tactic is instead of begging/threatening, we put Colt's plate in the refrigerator if he won't eat. When he asks for a snack later in the evening, we bring out his plate with cold food. We've found that this allows him to eat whenever he wants to so its not working!

I would love to hear your secrets! By the way, Sheparding a Childs Heart by Ted Tripp is an excellent book!

A Sneak Peak

We celebrated Colt's birthday on Saturday with a farm party at my parent's house. Colt was thrilled that so many of his friends chose to spend the afternoon with him! I was thrilled that the animals, sandbox, play house and corn entertained the kids. Did I mention we had a spontaneous chicken chasing contest?

My official photographer (Mandy) hasn't sent me pictures but these were some from my camera. I'm hoping Holly posts some of the chicken rodeo.

Notice the pigs in the mud. Behind the cows is a garden!

Everyone enjoyed their animal noses

Colt asked me on Sunday if he could have another party next weekend!
